February has arrived and snowdrops are in abundance, Spring is approaching rapidly.
In the last month woodpeckers have started to attack a few of my hives, disturbing the bees. Loose chicken wire skirted around the hive which can be pulled up and down to accommodate opening the roof, seems to be the answer.
Things to consider in the apiary this month -
- Check hives for any evidence of rodent damage.
- Continue to heft the hives and feed accordingly.
- Close any dead hives to prevent robbing, until you find time to clean the equipment thoroughly.
- Should weather become ‘wild and windy ‘strap the hives to reduce risk of damage
- Check mouse guards are free of debris.
- Be mindful of flooding apiaries, should the rain return this month
- Start making up new frames in preparation for the spring.
- Check your stock, order now if necessary or attend The Spring Convention for competitive prices 17th – 19th April at Harper Adams University, Shropshire.
- Clean dirty equipment or refresh if necessary.
The AGM is to be held this Wednesday 4th – please attend if possible.
Rugby Apiary cleaning session to be held on February 22nd 2pm, please support if you can. Kim maintains the Apiary all year round, it would be wonderful to see members help for an hour.
