Tips for the Month:
-
If you are doing oxalic acid treatment, wait until temperatures have dropped to at least -3°C for a few days to ensure a broodless period in the colony
-
Continue to monitor stores every few weeks on all colonies by weighing or hefting. Feed fondant if the hive seems light.
-
Ensure hives are strapped up or put a brick or stone on the lid to ensure lids are not blown off in windy weather.
-
Review your hive records and plan what you intend to do next year - e.g. which hives to breed from.
-
Identify equipment that needs cleaning or repair and make lists of what you need to order for the next season, or ask for these articles for Christmas.
-
Clean equipment on a cold day - propolis and wax are brittle come off easily using your hive tool to scrape QE, hive boxes, and crown boards clean and then flame them to destroy pathogens.
-
Use the time to do some study to increase your enjoyment and interest in beekeeping. Check out the BBKA website for information.
