Tips for the Month:

  • Put on mouse guards 

  • Unite colonies if you have not already done so, particularly weak colonies, but ensure that they are healthy before uniting with another colony and infecting them.

  • Continue to monitor the stores for all colonies by weighing or hefting. Only open the hive to check if you have to.

  • Keep entrances small to make robbing more difficult and to enable bees to fight off wasp attacks.

  • Monitor hornet traps regularly and release trapped insects and take photos of suspected hornets to report to non-native species apps and websites.

  • Store empty supers in stacks with a solid top and bottom to prevent wax moths entering. Check they are properly lined up.

  • Identify equipment that needs cleaning or repair
